About überculture

"überculture successfully delivers independent art to the eyes and ears of the public."
- Mark Achbar, director of The Corporation

"Virulent, anti-corporate propaganda."
- Vancouver Province Editorial, March 2007

Cultural diversity is threatened by the commercial interests that control and influnce much of the art and media in our society. überculture is a non-profit collective committed to reclaiming culture by supporting independent, political art and challenging corporations that endanger free expression.

überculture was born in Montreal, QC in early 2003, and over the past few years has organized dozens of events, campaigns and projects designed to promote a diverse and independent cultural climate.

Some highlights include:
  • The creation of an international political cinema network.
  • Two cross-country tours exposing Wal-Mart's destructive business practices through agitprop theatre and multimedia presentations.
  • Numerous political concerts, talks and workshops by independent artists and media makers.
  • The development of überbrü, a non-profit, political beer.
  • Successfully pressuring a Montreal cafe chain to switch to Fair Trade coffee.
  • Research leading to Norway's divestment of over $450 million in Wal-Mart stock.
überculture and our projects have received press coverage in numerous newspaper and magazine articles, radio programs, and TV news segments in Canada and abroad. We have also been featured on the CBC series Make Some Noise and are the subject of Wal-Town The Film, a documentary film co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
