Cinema Politica
überculture’s Cinema Politica is a much-needed head-butt to the corporate movie machine. - Avi Lewis, Filmmaker/Journalist
Cinema Politica is a cross-Canada grassroots network of political cinema exhibition sites showcasing independent Canadian artists. Screenings take place mostly on campuses, and with support, the network will grow and increase its Canadian content. The project is organized by überculture in collaboration with CitizenShift and various other groups. Cinema Politica is dedicated to using the art of film to engage, inform, and inspire audiences to respond, process and act in order to effect positive change. Cinema Politica was started in Vancouver, British Columbia at Langara College in 2001, and currently hosts locals eight Canadian provinces, France, and the USA.
Accessibility to media and utilization of both public institutions and public space remain incredibly important to the spirit of this project, therefore the majority of screenings are free to all. Sometimes, due to high screening and/or shipping costs, we ask for a small donation at the door.
Cinema Politica is committed to Canadian content, and supporting independent Canadian filmmakers and media makers. We prioritize works by artists who are marginalized or who are constructing narratives around issues of oppression and subjugation.
